TRIVIA: Every drop of the Colorado River outside your hotel window passed through the turbine generators of the Hoover dam. That’s right, the entire flow of the Colorado River passes through the turbines. The only exceptions were in 1941 and in 1983 when Lake Mead rose so quickly, due to heavy rainfall, that the Hoover Dam’s spillways diverted excess water that could not be released in sufficient volume through just the turbines.
Plan for a WHOLE Day Trip to the Hoover Dam
Because the drive is about 90 minutes each way, this should be considered a “whole day trip.” If you leave Laughlin before 10:00 AM, you can be back in plenty of time to graze a Hotel/Casino Buffet, or plan on a wonderful dinner on the Laughlin side or across the river in Bullhead City. Frankly, however, most visitors who make it a point to get up and leave as early as possible say that is best: less traffic, less people, free parking spots available, no wait for the more-popular tours, etc.

It is jointly named for Mike O’Callaghan, Governor of Nevada from 1971–1979, and Pat Tillman, a football player who left his football career with the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the United States Army and was later killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire.
