Richard Nixon funded his first congress campaign using the money he’d won playing poker with some of his former Navy colleagues. The $6,000 he won at the poker table helped him on his way to his first political post.

However, a French woman named Eleanore Dumont set up a blackjack casino in California in 1854. As well as always dealing the cards, Mme Dumont had a reputation for winning most of the games she played. Although she died in 1876, she was nominated (but not elected) to become a part of the Blackjack Hall of Fame over a hundred years later in 2006.

When Annette Obrestad from Norway won the first World Series of Poker Europe main event in 2007, she was a day of her nineteenth birthday. She remains the youngest person to have ever won a WSOP bracelet.

The fifth card in a game of poker is often referred to as the ‘river’. This nickname stems from the days when poker was played on the riverboats in America and a method of cheating was to store a hidden card up a sleeve to switch with a poor fifth card. However, if you were discovered to be cheating the punishment was harsh – you’d be thrown into the river off the back of the boat.

A New Jersey grandma visiting Atlantic City broke the record for the world’s longest crap roll and most successive dice rolls without ‘sevening out’ in 2009. Patricia Demauro beat odds of 1 in 1.56 trillion when she played craps for four hours and 18 minutes without landing a seven. Although Ms Demauro didn’t share the amount of money that she had won her record-breaking game, it’s likely that she made hundreds of thousands or maybe millions in that one casino session.

In the UK, one of the biggest online casino wins came from a 20p spin. A fisherman who wished to remain anonymous started playing a slot game called the Hall of Gods and watched his 20p turn into a massive £5.4 million win.

The first casino built-in Las Vegas on Highway 91 was the Pair o Dice Club, established in 1931. The first casino on the current Strip was El Rancho Vegas, opened in 1941. One of the most well-known early casinos in Vegas was gangster Bugsy Siegel’s Flamingo. Apparently, Bugsy named the casino after his show dance girlfriend Virginia Hill’s long legs.
